PhD Opportunity Towards a Flower Waste Biorefinery: Predictive Enzyme Design for Bio-Based Chemicals at Nottingham

We are recruiting a PhD researcher within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham to work on biocatalytic conversion of complex biomass such as plant/flower-derived feedstocks into valuable chemicals. The project tackles real-world challenges in enzyme selectivity by combining experimental work with modelling enzyme-substrate interactions to improve process efficiency. The student will benefit from an interdisciplinary supervision team comprising of Dr Parimala Shivaprasad, Dr Simone Morra, and Prof. Jonathan Hirst.

This role offers hands-on laboratory research combined with modelling to support and interpret experimental results, with skills relevant to industrial R&D and process development in flavours, fragrances, and bio-based chemicals.

Application closing date: 16 February 2026
