Explore the unknown and get to grips with the biggest challenges in Big Science. And, alongside world class engineers and technologists, use everything you’ve learnt to find real-answers that shape society and improve lives.
Put simply, discover the kind of impact you can make when you work with some of the best facilities and brightest scientists in the world.
As part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a world-leading multi-disciplinary science organisation, and our goal is to deliver economic, societal, scientific and international benefits to the UK and its people – and more broadly to the world.
Through world-class facilities and people, we provide access to world-leading, large-scale facilities across a range of physical and life sciences, enabling research, innovation and skills training in these areas. Our National Laboratories promote academic and industrial collaboration and translation of our research to market through direct interaction with industry.
These roles are part of the Central Laser Facility (CLF) which is one of the world’s leading laser user facilities and the national laser facility for the UK. We are dedicated to supporting national, global science and innovation communities. With over 45 years of experience as a laser facility, our labs and people build some of the best lasers in the world.
We are collaborative, creative, and community-focused – the Industry Partnerships and Innovation (IPI) Group works across the whole laser facility, interacting closely with science staff, operations group leaders, academic and industry users, and the wider STFC and Harwell community. These roles will join the IPI Group and work on the CLF’s Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC).
We are now building EPAC – a 10 Hz Petawatt laser facility delivering laser-driven beams of x-rays and particles for insight, innovation, and discovery. From experimental exploration of extreme quantum electrodynamics through to rapid, high resolution, 3D x-ray imaging of high-value engineering components. EPAC will deliver a significant uplift in capacity for academic users and will enable us to open up this novel and exciting technology to industry through a dedicated user programme. It will be a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative, hub of expertise – an ecosystem for innovation – working alongside university, security, and industry communities.
About the role:
We are looking for passionate champions of the application of novel laser-driven accelerators. Champions to assist in the delivery of a programme of engagement, research, and development that ensures EPAC is primed to deliver experiments tailored to industry users.
The roles will support the scientific direction of the programme, champion industry applications and expert technical knowledge key to driving industrial impact and societal benefit from high power lasers. Growing and maintaining key relationships integral to the programme’s success including with senior academics, industry partners, and staff across STFC and UKRI.
A significant portion of senior role involves industry engagement and collaborating with industry and university partners to demonstrate the value of laser-driven sources including championing of sector-specific engagement strategies, and commercialisation considerations such as IP protection.
About You
Are you PhD qualified (or close to completion) with experience in laser based experimentation, experience of our large scale facilities and a curiosity about industrial R&D? Ideally a motivated scientist with initiative and with a strong curiosity about delivering impact for EPAC and its communities. We are seeking a candidate to join our collaborative team, working across a diverse range of systems and novel laser-driven accelerators applications.
We’d like to find someone with excellent interpersonal and communication skills able to collaborate closely with a wide range of colleagues and collaborators. Along with a dynamic approach and excellent organisation skills. A self-motivated individual there will be an expectation to initiate, lead and develop relationships internally and externally. In particular becoming the point of contact and deliver research and business-led application for industrial partners. We’d like see applicants that already have experience, or a desire, of working closely with industry, especially for the Senior Scientist position.
We ask some of the biggest questions in the universe, to answer some of the biggest challenges in the world. Together, our scientists, technologists, engineers and business support team explore the unknown across every field you could think of. And they turn what they find into work that changes the world around us.
