Position Purpose

Manages all scientific, financial and operational aspects of the Faculty of Science Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility and ensures that the facility operates effectively and efficiently as a state-of-the- art, internationally recognized, research and educational core facility at the University of Ottawa.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage the budget for the NMR Facility, including collection of time-based user fees and assistance in preparation of internal and external funding proposals, to ensure that the financial resources of the Facility meet the needs for salaries, equipment maintenance, repairs and upgrades.
  • Supervise the NMR Facility technician as well as interview, hire and train additional NMR Facility personnel as required to maintain the highest quality research and educational service standards thereby ensuring client satisfaction.
  • Oversee installations, maintenance, repairs and modifications to the NMR equipment (capital cost ca. $4.3M) and procure all supporting equipment, parts and services required for the efficient and effective operation of the Facility as a state-of-the-art research and educational service.
  • Provide personal one-on-one training, instruction and scientific recommendations to all users of the Facility as well as teach formal undergraduate and graduate courses in NMR spectroscopy to fulfill the University of Ottawa’s commitment to training highly qualified personnel.
  • Keep abreast of all modern NMR techniques by reading the current literature and participating in NMR-related scientific conferences, meetings and workshops as a representative of the University of Ottawa. This knowledge is transmitted to the Facility users and used to implement novel techniques on the NMR equipment in order to maintain a state-of-the-art Facility and solve demanding research problems.
  • Collaborate with all Facility users by conducting specialized, non-routine NMR measurements on their behalf to solve research problems.
  • Manage and maintain statistics for the time allotment for all facility users on all of the NMR equipment to facilitate the most time-efficient, productive and fair use of the equipment.
  • Solicit business from and provide research and collaborative service to users external to the University of Ottawa to generate revenue for the Facility and promote the University of Ottawa as a leading research-intensive institution.

 

What you will bring:

  • A Ph.D. degree in chemistry with a specialty in nuclear magnetic resonance
  • Minimum two years working in a nuclear magnetic resonance laboratory in a technical and/or managerial capacity
  • A comprehensive knowledge of the physical principles governing the NMR spectroscopy of liquids and solids as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Extensive experience with advanced experimental solids and liquids NMR techniques.
  • Experience with pulse programming and computer management.
  • Strong skills in effective written and oral communication.
  • Extensive experience in instrument operation, adjustment and repair.
  • Strong interpersonal and management skills.
  • Bilingualism an asset
