The Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London is one of the premier departments in the world, internationally recognised for its excellence in research, teaching and enterprise.

Building on this the Department of Chemistry is entering the most exciting time in its history. Following a move to the £170M Molecular Sciences Research Hub, one of the most advanced chemical facilities in the world at the new £1BN White City Campus the Department is continuing its ambitious expansion plans of its research activities. Bringing together work in Molecular Sciences across the College, and with external partners, the Department aims to drive both fundamental science and applications orientated research, seeing these as a common endeavour. 

Applications are therefore invited for 2 Lecturer and 3 Reader/Chair posts in Chemistry, commencing as soon as possible or latest end of 2024. Applications are welcomed from outstanding individuals in any area of Chemistry.

Duties and responsibilities

You will work in the area of the Chemical Sciences within the Department of Chemistry, which is led by Professor Oscar Ces. You will contribute to the academic mission of Imperial College London to deliver world class scholarship, education and research. In addition, the post holder will be required to contribute to administration within the Department.

Essential requirements

Essential requirements, commensurate with career stage:

  • An undergraduate degree and a PhD (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely related discipline, together with an excellent record of research achievement.
  • A national/ international reputation and expertise in the field of Chemistry
  • Evidence of the potential to plan, lead and direct research activity of outstanding quality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • An excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications, confirming national/ international standing
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training, including successful PhD student supervision.
  • Evidence of being able to maintain and lead a coherent and large-scale research activity
  • A demonstrable track record of securing high levels of external research funding for major programmes, enabling income generation opportunities and/or commercialization activities and attracting PhD students and postdoctoral researchers
  • Track record of integrating research with learning and teaching to deliver an excellent student experience and the ability to lead the development of a portfolio of teaching modules.
  • Evidence of effective team working and collaborative development and inspiring others
  • Ability to think laterally and to anticipate trends and opportunities
  • A commitment to diversity and an ability to work with staff, students and visitors from a wide range of backgrounds
  • A high level of commitment and enthusiasm.
