Assistant/Associate Professors in Chemistry Heriot-Watt University, deadline 10th January 2020

The Institute of Chemical Sciences (ICS) currently has 21 primary and 13 secondary members of academic staff. The primary members are organised within three Research Groupings: Molecular Chemistry; Materials Chemistry and Dynamics & Structure. Two experimental officers operate the analytical services. There were 12 primary PDRAs and 45 primary PGR students at the start of academic year 2019-20. ICS holds of substantial additional EPSRC funding, including a Platform Grant in Dynamical Chemical Processes; and attracts significant funding from non-RCUK sources, including early-stage drug discovery as part of investment through Mironid®, joint with University of Strathclyde. EPS has an excellent in-house NMR service and is a partner in the recently announced Scottish high-field NMR initiative, and has recently upgraded to a state-of-the art dual source single-crystal X-Ray diffractometry suite. For biologically applied synthetic chemists there are opportunities to collaborate with IB3, encompassing excellent cell culture, microscale thermophoresis, super-resolution microscopy and proteomics facilities.

These roles are being recruited as part of Heriot-Watt’s Bicentennial Research Leaders initiative  which aims to increase the number of Research Leaders in the University by creating new posts when we identify the best talent, in support of the University’s five year strategic plan to build on our position as a leading research and knowledge transfer institution.

There is scope for solid state chemistry research, in particular computational but also experimental, as long as it fits / complements existing research strengths in the wider school.
