When: June 2024
Where: ‘The Vale Resort’ in South Wales, UK
HarwellXPS is hosting the 2024 Summer School for XPS at ‘The Vale Resort’ in South Wales, UK. This is a continuation of the long running workshop series run by CNRS in France, which concluded in 2022.
This event is aimed at researchers from all stages, from XPS novices up to established experts – with concurrent sessions enabling delegates to pick and choose which sessions they wish to attend. Seminars will be delivered by world leading experts in the field including David Morgan (HarwellXPS/Cardiff University, UK), Mark Biesinger (Surface Science Western/Western University, Canada), Emily Smith (University of Nottingham, UK) and Matthew Linford (Brigham Young University, USA) among others to be confirmed at a later date.
A general overview of the programme will be:
Day 1: Mixture of joint and spit sessions – Fundamentals for beginners, Advanced Experimental discussions for Advanced users
Day 2: New developments in software tools (mostly joint)
Day 3: Advanced material analysis – focus on new experimental methods to analyse batteries, catalysts, biological material and plastics
Day 4: Focus on good experimental and data analysis practices – ensuring reliable, repeatable science and discussing ISO standards
Day 5: Combining XPS/surface analysis with complementary techniques for further materials understanding
There will be a big focus on ensuring reliable and repeatable science throughout, and providing the attendees with the tools to do so.
The event will be attended by a number of industrial delegates, including XPS manufacturers and users alike.
“I attended the 2022 XPS Analysis Workshop at Le Croisic, in France. I have been doing XPS for 10 years and this event was amazing; both from a learning perspective as well as with networking opportunities. The depth of expertise of the instructors was top notch; I brought back a wealth of new analysis methods to study our materials. It was also useful to get some possible solutions into sample charging and preparation problems. I would definitely go again” – Myles Bos, Ballard Power Systems Inc. (Canada)
Attendees will be given analysis software as part of the fee, along with a large dataset of standards and model data and materials to ensure good practice and aid in their future science. There will be lots of hands on sessions, with demonstrators on hand to provide training and assistance throughout. Attendees will be provided with a large handbook (previous year ~300 pages A4) containing all course material and a series of practical guides for future use.Attendees will be provided with electronic supplementary material (Videos/Training software/Databases) for future use. There will be a poster session (with prize) for ECRs (up to 6 years postdoctoral experience) and an opportunity for additional posters (with no prize) for all. There will be an optional organised excursion to explore the local area one afternoon. Alternatively, delegates may stay and make use of the wonderful facilities at the Vale (Gym/Spa etc.).
Prices for attendance are subject to change, and nominally set at £650 students/750 postdocs/850 academics/1500 industry. The workshop is 5 nights and all accommodation, meals, daytime refreshment (tea/coffee etc), excursion (and karaoke) are included in the price, as is the large library of software tools and reference material provided to all delegates.
